The term "liberal" means different things to different people. Some folks who are classical progressives (i.e., in the mold of Margaret Sanger, as Hillary Clinton once described herself) and who might prefer not to emphasize their belief in eugenics might call themselves "liberal". Just as a libertine might call him or her self "libertarian" (perhaps not knowing the meaning of the term), a classical progressive might call him or her self "liberal".

Wikipedia (still) has an excellent article on classical liberalism. A classical liberal is most definitely not a classical progressive.
